- I. Introduction
- ============================================================================
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 1.1 What is the SGA-Net?
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- SGA-Net was founded on the idea of having a network
- which would provide support to not only users, but also SysOps.
-
-
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 1.2 The History of SGA-Net (from Edward Stangler)
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Well, to make a long story short...
-
- SGA stands for SysOp's Guild Association. It's a small
- SysOp help group. They formed a loose network called "SGAnet" -
- notice the small name difference - to keep up-to-date with
- each other. Well, things fell through - and I happen to be the
- one left with the scraps.
-
- Anyways, I reorganized the network as "SGA-Net". Most
- of the old nodes were gone and I started from scratch. With
- much greatly appreciated help from Craig Landgraf, the original
- Houston hub, I got the net back up and running. Now, it's a
- totally new BBS network with a great amount of potential.
-
- Oh, one thing I would like to say:
-
- SGA-NET IS A TOTALLY SEPARATE ENTITY FROM THE SGA ORGANIZATION.
-
- They are two completely different things. Being on one
- does NOT automatically make you a member of the other, nor is
- it required for you to be a member in one to get into the other.
-
- Whew.
-
- Why keep the same basic name? Well, the name signifies
- everything that the net stands for. It embodies the resolution.
- And besides - I made a bunch of neat ANSI screens for it.
-
- [grin grin]

- 2.2 Message Echos
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- A complete list of message echos can be found in the
- SGAECHOS.LST and SGANET.NA files (both located in the SGA-Net
- Starter Pack.)
-
- Currently, all message echos originate from the SGA-Net
- Homesite (30:30/0). In the future, we plan to have variable
- origin sites for various topics - but at the moment, there is
- no apparent need.
-
- Moderators are sought for any new echos added to the
- network. The SGA-Net Coordinator, Edward Stangler, is the
- default moderator for all message echos.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 2.3 File Echos
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- A complete list of file echos can be found in the SGAECHOS.LST
- file.
-
- The SGA-Net file echos contain programs which are distributed
- in a general fashion and is a voluntary service to the
- author(s). If noted in SGAECHOS.LST, some echos contain
- programs which are distributed with direct permission from the
- author(s).
-
- To receive any of the file echos, please contact your Host/Hub.
-
- If you wish to distribute your own programs on SGA-Net, please
- send netmail to 30:30/0. All authors are welcome, if the
- programs are legal.

- III. Rules
- ============================================================================
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 3.1 General Rules
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The following is a list of common sense responsibilities which
- apply to everyone. I'm confident we can all abide by a quality
- standard. :)
-
-
- * Insults, flaming, and other acts of aggression will not be
- tolerated in public sections of SGA-Net. Use private netmail
- to communicate your ideas instead.
-
- * No obscenities in public sections of SGA-Net.
-
- * Use your SGA-Net node number at all times. Sending netmail
- to someone using another net's numbering system can make it
- difficult to reply if the destination isn't on that network.
-
- * Please try to communicate in English in all areas, unless
- otherwise noted.
-
- * Real names. I like mine; do you like yours? Handles are
- permitted - like for a signature, etc. - if your real name
- has already been stated.
-
-
- Thanks in advance for adhering to these simple suggestions.
-
-
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 3.2 Netmail
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Netmail is private only to the extent that only those who get
- the message are the ones who read it. So, privacy in netmail
- can only be guaranteed if it goes directly from your system to
- its destination. It is up to Hosts/Hubs to be responsible
- regarding their viewing of netmail passing through their
- systems.
-
- IF IT'S EXTREMELY PRIVATE, SEND IT DIRECT. DO NOT ROUTE IT.
-
-
-
-

-
-
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 3.3 Message Echos
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- The message echos are one of the main offerings of SGA-Net.
- Posting messages in a network echo can be very enjoyable,
- rewarding, and enlightening. However, this bit of nirvana can
- easily be smudged. So, we ask you and your users to please
- follow some plain guidelines set forth below:
-
- Participants in all message echos must follow FOUR simple
- rules**:
-
- (1) No obscene language (or pictures).
- What is and what is not "obscene" is for the echo's
- moderator to interpret.
-
- (2) Use ONLY real names in "To:" and "From:" fields. Signatures
- may be handles. Also, please remember to use your SGA-Net
- node number at all times. English messages in the echos
- are strongly suggested.
-
- (3) Insults, flames, or other acts of aggression will not be
- tolerated in the echos. If you have something personal to
- tell "Joe Schmoe", do so in netmail.
-
- (4) Try to stay on topic. There's a reason for the existence
- of more than one echo... ;)
-
- ** Rules and fun guidelines are subject to changes at any time.
-
-
- Of course, there's a hidden 5th rule: Have fun.
-
- Oh, also: Echos which are dedicated to one piece or group of
- software are NOT official support echos, unless otherwise noted.
- So, please don't think it's your right to get support from the
- authors through the echos. However, we do encourage them to
- post a bunch! yeah!

- SGA-Net Guide Page 4 Rules
-
-
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 3.4 Enforcement (The one section I don't like writing)
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- For message echos, it is up to the moderator to enforce SGA-Net
- policies and make decisions on issues where SGA-Net policy gives
- him that authority.
-
- Hosts/Hubs have the authority to make decisions on enforcement
- only temporarily. For example, a hub may stop feeding a node if
- the hub feels the node is acting against SGA-Net policy.
- However, the hub MUST notify the SGA-Net Coordinator (Edward
- Stangler) within 48 hours of the decision. After 72 hours, the
- node may make an appeal to the SGA-Net Coordinator (Edward
- Stangler) regarding the enforcement.
-
- If anyone has questions regarding SGA-Net policy, the SGA-Net
- Coordinator (Edward Stangler) may be contacted and requested
- to intervene or review the issue.
-
- This isn't a "police state" network - but anarchy will not be
- allowed to rule.

-
-
-
- ============================================================================
- IV. Requirements
- ============================================================================
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 4.1 Becoming a Node
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Nodes are the individual systems in an area.
-
- (1) You MUST have a mailer set up before you apply.
- This may sound a bit silly, but I for one do not want to
- help 1000 new members of SGA-Net set up mailers... hehe...
- Sorry!
-
- (2) You MUST have your mail tosser set up to handle the archive
- type chosen by your Host/Hub. Packets originating from
- 30:30/0 will be in PKZIP v2.04g format. Even though we
- strongly suggest keeping this archive format throughout the
- routing process, some Hosts/Hubs may choose to use another
- archive format for their packets.
-
- (3) You MUST carry the echos indicated as "required" in the
- SGAECHOS.LST file. These echos will provide you very
- important information regarding the latest news on SGA-Net.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 4.2 Becoming a Hub
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Hubs serve an area code.
-
- (1) All requirements for nodes apply to you.
-
- (2) You MUST poll your Host/RC at least 3 times a week.
-
- (3) You MUST deliver mail to all your nodes at least once a
- day, unless this figure is deemed overly excessive by
- common sense (in special cases.) This applies only to
- nodes with the "Crash" flag.
-
- Also, here are a few more items of interest:
-
- [1] You will be responsible for all your nodes.
-
- [2] It is suggested that you use the same archive format as the
- SGA-Net Homesite. Currently, this is PKZIP v2.04g.
-
- [3] You may edit the SGA-Net Nodelist to add a new node on a
- temporary basis only if you do not distribute the altered
- nodelist outside your authoritive area. Any changes you
- make are not official; you must submit them to 30:30/0.
-
- ____________________________________________________________________________
- SGA-Net Guide Page 6 Requirements
-
-
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 4.3 Becoming a Host
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Hosts serve all the hubs in a state or portion of a country.
-
- A Host is automatically considered a Hub if no Hubs exist in its
- service area.
-
- (1) All requirements for nodes apply to you.
- (2) You MUST poll your RC at least 3 times a week.
-
- Also:
-
- [1] You are responsible for all the Hubs you service.
-
- [2] It is suggested that you use the same archive format as the
- SGA-Net Homesite.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 4.4 Becoming a Regional Coordinator (RC)
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Regional Coordinators serve an entire or large part of a country.
-
- * All requirements for Host apply to you, except you must
- poll the SGA-Net Homesite (30:30/0) at least 3 times a week.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 4.5 Choosing Positions
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- All positions higher than Hub are appointed by the SGA-Net
- Coordinator (Edward Stangler). Hub positions may be chosen by
- the Host to lighten the burden of mail delivery.
-
- If a person joins the network from a new country, he or she will
- be offered the position of Regional Coordinator. The new node
- can either accept it permanently, temporarily, or refuse. If one
- of the latter two, it is the responsibility of the new node to
- find a permanent replacement.
-
- If a person joins the network from a new state or province, he
- or she will be offered the position of Host. The new node can
- either accept it permanently, temporarily, or refuse. If one of
- the latter two, it is the reponsibility of the new node to find
- a permanent replacement.
-

-
-
-
- ============================================================================
- V. Procedures
- ============================================================================
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 5.1 HOW TO JOIN SGA-NET (A very simple process! yeah!)
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- * Complete the SGANET.APP file, rename it to SGAAPP.xxx (where
- 'xxx' is your initials), and send it to 30:30/0 [you may
- route the netmail through your local Host/Hub].
-
- * You will receive notification of your acceptance into the
- network. This may take up to 10 working days, probably 5.
-
- Along with your notification, you will receive a current
- SGA-Net Nodelist. Please compile the nodelist for use
- immediately. As soon as you receive notification from your
- Hub, you can be receiving message and file echos.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 5.2 Disputes of Node vs. Hub
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- If a Hub decides to cut off the feed of a node for any reason,
- the Hub MUST notify the SGA-Net Coordinator (Edward Stangler)
- within 48 hours.
-
- After 72 hours, if the node has not persuaded the Hub to
- reestablish the feed, he or she may contact the SGA-Net
- Coordinator (Edward Stangler) and request a review of the action.
-
- If a feed is cut and then reestablished, it cannot be cut again
- for at least 72 hours. Continued cutting and reestablishing
- as harassment is not allowed and will not be tolerated.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- 5.3 Taking a Node Down
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Taking your BBS down during a thunderstorm or other event for up
- to 48 hours is permitted without notice to the network. Taking
- your BBS down temporarily for over 48 hours requires
- notification of your Hub at least 24 hours before doing so.
-
- Taking your BBS down permanently or removing yourself from
- SGA-Net requires a notification letter to the SGA-Net
- Coordinator at least 48 hours before doing so.
-
- Removing a node from your authority requires a notification to
- the SGA-Net Coordinator (Edward Stangler).
